AMR Sensitization Session at Akinyele Abattoir, Oyo State
November 19, 2025 | Akinyele LGA, Oyo State
On November 19, 2025, a targeted AMR and hygiene sensitization session was conducted at Akinyele Abattoir, Akinyele LGA, Oyo State, a high-risk setting for zoonotic infections and antimicrobial misuse. The 60-minute interactive session, facilitated by Dr. Akaso Mujeeb (Veterinarian & AMR Advocate) in both English and Yoruba, brought together butchers, animal handlers, market leaders, and other key stakeholders. The session covered understanding AMR, responsible antibiotic use, safe meat handling, hygiene practices, and prevention of cross-contamination. Key findings revealed low AMR awareness among butchers, widespread unregulated antibiotic use by herders and animal suppliers, and inadequate hygiene infrastructure within the abattoir. A significant concern raised was the lack of government compensation following carcass condemnation, which has fueled resistance to inspection and enforcement. Despite these challenges, participants showed strong willingness to comply with hygiene standards and support AMR reduction efforts, highlighting the critical importance of trust, fairness, and collaboration between government authorities, veterinarians, and abattoir workers.
